On the original “Piece by Piece” — released in năm ngoái on the album of the same — Clarkson compared her relationship with Brandon Blackstock to the way her own father treated the singer and the rest of her family during her tumultuous childhood. As she told The Huffington Post at the time, “I didn’t realize the gravity of the situation until I had a child of my own, and until I experienced love like I vị with Brandon on the daily. I guess you don’t realize something is missing until you feel it.”

In the wake of her 2020 divorce from Blackstock, though, Clarkson decided lớn not-so-subtly alter the “Piece by Piece” lyrics during her ongoing Las Vegas residency. Rather than the chorus celebrating a man for never walking away, asking for money, or providing care, Clarkson put the chorus totally in the first person: “But piece by piece, I collected me up,” she sings, adding later, “I just walk away, when they ask for money/I take care of me, cause I love me.”

The most pointed change came at the very end of the chorus, with Clarkson turning the original “Piece by piece, he restored my faith/That a man can be kind and a father could stay” khổng lồ “Piece by piece, I restored my faith/That a heart can still beat even when it breaks.”

Clarkson loosely acknowledged the lyrics change prior to lớn performing “Piece by Piece,” telling the crowd: “This song, I initially wrote just super hopeful, right? và well, sometimes, hopeful turns into hopeless. So here we go, ‘Piece by Piece.’”

This isn’t the first time Clarkson has used a bit of artistic license to lớn alter a tuy nhiên and address her divorce. Back in March, during her Kellyoke segment on The Kelly Clarkson Show, she covered Gayle’s breakout hit “Abcdefu” & beyond dropping “fuck” for “forget” — because this was on daytime TV after all, she changed the lyrics to, “Forget you and your dad/And the fact that you got half/And my broken heart/Turned that shit into art.” (The “shit” was actively censored for broadcast.)

In June 2020, however, Clarkson filed for divorce from Blackstock after seven years of marriage, và she channeled the pain of the split into her upcoming 10th studio album, Chemistry, out on Friday (June 23). She references “Piece by Piece” in her track named after iconic actor Rock Hudson.

“When I wrote ‘Piece by Piece,’ it was a very hopeful song,” the singer told The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview. “I wasn’t able to say everything at the time. A lot of that tuy vậy is about what I desired & what I hoped & what I saw in someone. Và it turns out I might not be singing that song again. It turns out that I maybe did marry into what I didn’t want to bởi in the first place. So it’s OK now.”

She continued, “It wasn’t for a couple years, but I think that’s the thing about seeing red flags and seeing things that aren’t healthy và recognizing that & not holding on to hope & potential all the time in a relationship. So just a lot of lessons learned, which is, I guess, all you can hope for, getting that it wasn’t all for naught.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Clarkson revealed that she wrote a lot of Chemistry‘s lyrics on the plane after dropping her two children off khổng lồ Blackstock. “To be just frank,” she said, “there would be times I’d fly my kids khổng lồ my ex and then I’d have to lớn fly back & then wake back up hours later for work again. And I was exhausted physically, mentally, emotionally. On those flights back when I’m by myself, those were the really hard moments. Và that’s when a lot of the songs were written because there’s so much that was going on & I was processing so much. Honestly, a lot of the songs were written in those moments on the way back.”
